I went to the hard work of collecting wild black walnuts, scraping off the pulpy outer coating, soaking them in water (discarding the ones that float), scrubbing them, then letting them dry for two weeks.
When I finally tried to crack them with one of those metal nut crackers, I couldn't. Hmmm, now what?
