Loss of a Goat
So, a part of life is death. If we live, we will one day die. And in order for us to live, something else has to die to feed us. Sadly, that something was Silas the goat. We had joked about having a feast of goat before we left Uganda, but we didn’t really plan on it… Unfortunately, Silas was killed by some wild dogs; Anthony was able to chase them off right after they did it, but it was too late - he was already dead. We felt like it would be a dishonor to his life if we just buried him, so we had a goat feast with the de Jongs. I know it sounds bad, but it does put a new perspective on where our food comes from and what has to be done to get meat.
Here you can see our goat noodle soup and liver and onions:
I also baked a coconut cake for the dinner. I adjusted a recipe from Meg for steamed coconut cupcakes. Since I don’t have a cupcake pan and I wouldn’t be able to fit one into a pot anyway, it ended up as cake.
Indonesian Coconut Cake:
1 cup flour
1 cup sugar
4 eggs
1/2 cup milk
1 tsp. baking powder
2/3 cup shredded coconut
Beat the sugar and eggs together, then mix in the rest of the ingredients. Steam for 40 minutes.
On a happier note, as if to replace Silas, we have a new baby chick. Only one of the eggs made it to the point of birth, but it is one of the cutest little things we’ve ever seen! We don’t know yet if it is male or female, so as of now, little chick remains nameless.

Glad to hear you got to experience this Sara. I know it is bittersweet, but way to do the right thing.
