Vitex Doniana

When I was visiting Uganda recently, I was out in Amuria with farmers and development workers.  They foraged for some wild fruits that were in a tree out in the field and I got to taste them.  You take off the peel and then chew on the remaining fruit until it stops tasting sweet, then you spit out the big pit that's in the middle.  To me, it tasted like and had similar texture to a not-very-sweet date.

They told me that when they were younger, they would call this "lunch break" and the Ateso name is Ewelo but it wasn't until I was at home randomly reading a book about agriculture in Africa, that I discovered the Latin name - Vitex Doniana.

Anyway, I always enjoy trying new things, especially plants found in the wild.  So, I'm thankful for that experience.
