Chocolate Chip Cookies Without the Chocolate Chips

Here in Soroti, there is a limited number of candy bar types at the store.  Basically, Snickers is the only familiar kind.  So Anthony gets lots of Snickers bars for desserts.  I, on the other hand, enjoy making homemade treats.  We combined our two interests one night when we made cookies.

Another thing to note is that we don't have chocolate chips in Uganda .  Sometimes we buy plain chocolate bars and chop them up to put into cookies, but it just isn't quite the same (especially since they don't really melt).  Anyway, we didn't have any of our American chocolate chips left, nor did we have any chocolate bars.

But we wanted to make cookies because the power was out and we didn't have much to do.  We decided that we could make chocolate chip cookie dough (minus the chocolate chips) and place a chunk of Snickers bar into the middle of the cookies.  Well, the dough was super soft (probably this is because there was no electricity, the temperature was 95 degrees, and the butter was therefore nearly melted).  I don't think I've ever made cookies with such soft dough.  But we went ahead anyway.  When I opened the oven to take the cookies out, I was amused to see how much they had grown.  They actually grew together and made a big blob across the whole cookie sheet!

So in the end, we had funny looking, big flat cookies with a slightly melted piece of Snickers bar in the middle of it.  We decided that although they tasted pretty good, if we were ever to make these again, we would put the Snickers piece in after we took the cookies out of the oven, instead of letting it get baked.  Also, we discovered the importance of chilling cookie dough before baking it...
