Guy Fawkes Day Cake/ Leah's Birthday
So I was visiting my dear friend Leah close to her birthday and we have a tradition of making special cakes for such days. So after searching around, we discovered a recipe for Guy Fawkes Day cake. This is a cake certain people eat in England to celebrate the day that Guy Fawkes (among others) were prevented from blowing up a bunch of gunpowder to assassinate the king of England and make the country Catholic. We remembered a rhyme that tells the date of the event: "Remember, remember, the _th of ___ember." But we couldn't remember what day or which month. September? November? December? We were going between September and November and kind of hoped it was September since that was the current month and the month of Leah's birthday. But no, it is the 5th of November. Nevertheless, we thought we'd celebrate anyway.
The cake is quite simple and tasty. Here you go:
1 cup flour
2/3 cup oats
1 Tbs. sugar
1 tsp. ground ginger
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. cloves
Mix the above dry ingredients together then add:
1/2 cup melted butter
2/3 cup molasses
2/3 cup milk
Bake at 350F for about 35 minutes in a greased 8x8" pan. We used a round casserole dish, but square would work too. It also took an extra 5 minutes or so, so check to see if it is done by poking a toothpick in the middle.
Also, we learned that the word "guy" which we use today comes from Guy Fawkes' name. Look it up if you want to know more!
