Saint John the Baptist Bread

What did John the Baptist eat in the desert?  Locusts and honey!  (Matthew 3:4)

Continuing in the exciting adventure of eating insects, Allyson and I cooked up this bread, which includes grasshoppers and honey, from the Eat a Bug Cookbook.  The process began with roasting the grasshoppers at 225F for 20 minutes until they got crispy.

They turned red like lobsters.

We removed the big scratchy legs and chopped them up to add into the batter.

You could see their little heads popping up out of the top of the bread...

We brought this to a fancy farm art show party and plenty of brave people tasted it.  It wasn't bad, but I felt like eating the grasshoppers not in bread, where they would be more crispy, would have been better.  Maybe we'll try grilling them on skewers next...
